People with central air conditioning units have it easy. They simply adjust the thermostat on the wall to indicate what temperature they would like their home to be and the air conditioning unit answers their request. Not everyone can afford central air, though, and many are forced to make due with window air conditioning units. Window air conditioning units can still keep a house cool but they’re loud and not as effective as central air. If a window air conditioning unit is all you can afford and it’s not cooling as much as you’d like it to, there are a few things you should check before you spring for a new unit. First, make sure the seals around the window are holding up. The sound of the unit should not increase from it's level and it should be clear of debris. One should try to detect the problem of old unit before spending money on a new window air conditioning unit.

Seals Are Important For Window Air Conditioning Unit

A window air conditioning unit sits inside of an open window and cools the air it pulls in from outside. The window air conditioning unit must then be sealed into the window so that the only air coming through is the air it pulls and sends through the cooling unit. If the window doesn’t have seals around its edges and there’s light poking through, hot air is then able to come around the sides of the unit. Cool air may be coming through the window air conditioning unit but if hot air is coming through also, you’re not going to have a very cool home. So make sure those seals are sound. If you can see light, you need new seals. Also, make sure the window air conditioning unit is sitting in the window correctly as an odd angle can also allow air to escape into your home.

Window Air Conditioning Unit Debris

As the window air conditioning unit pulls air into your home, it’s also pulling in dust, pollen and other impurities. These can sometimes clog the window air conditioning unit so it will need to be cleaned every now and again to make sure you’re getting nothing but cold air coming through.

Sound Of Window Air Conditioning Unit

If you’ve used your window air conditioning unit for a while, you know what loud sound it makes. If it begins to make any weird noises or it gets even louder, that’s an indication that something’s wrong. Listen closely to determine if it’s the fan or if something’s maybe clogging the airways.

If your window air conditioning unit is not functioning correctly it would be better to get a new one rather than have a hot home or even run the risk of starting a fire. Of course, central air would be better but if window air is all you can afford at least make sure it’s running effectively.
